Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutations)

I love to practice and teach Surya Namaskar for so many reasons.  Surya Namaskar is a specific set of postures, practiced in the form of a dynamic sequence.  Once learned, it’s an easy go-to practice that you can turn to & receive immediate benefits from, even if you only have a spare 10 mins.  On busy days, if I can fit in 4-6 rounds of Surya Namaskar, followed by a twist & 5mins in Savasana (corpse pose), I always feel more resilient and grounded. Even on days when I indulge in a longer practice, I always include a few rounds of Surya Namaskar.  There’s something about practicing the same sequence over an extended time period – the only variable is ME – it can be a very informative practice if you allow it. Surya Namaskar is a common way to commence an Ashtanga Yoga practice, preceded by warm-up as appropriate. Different Surya Namaskar sequences exist and I have chosen the particular sequence I teach because of the calming effect on the endocrine (hormonal) system.  The best way to assimilate these subtle changes is to spend time in Savasana (corpse pose).  If feels great to give your body a rest physically but the real work is going on at a much more subtle level.  It’s also interesting to take time to notice the effects throughout the course of your day.
